How to Use the Pip Value Calculator
Pick your symbol and the pip value updates straight away.
- Choose your symbol or asset class. It sets the pip size and contract size for that market, from forex to crypto.
- Enter your trade size in lots.
- Adjust the pip size or contract size if your exact symbol differs from the preset.
- For a pair not quoted in your account currency, such as a JPY pair, set the quote-currency rate; leave it at 1 when the symbol is quoted in your account currency.
The tool shows what a one-pip move is worth in your account currency, so you can turn a stop in pips into a figure in money.
What a Pip Is Worth
A pip is the standard smallest move on an instrument: 0.0001 for most currency pairs, and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. The money that move is worth depends on your trade size and the currency the pair is quoted in.
For a standard lot of a USD-quoted pair, one pip is worth about $10. A mini lot is about $1, and a micro lot about $0.10. When the pair is not quoted in your account currency, the value is converted at the current exchange rate.
- Larger lot sizes raise the pip value in direct proportion.
- JPY pairs use a 0.01 pip, so the pip value is worked out on that smaller step.
- The quote-currency rate converts the result back into your account currency.
Pip Value and Your Stop-Loss
Knowing the pip value turns a stop-loss in pips into a figure in money, which is what risk is really measured in. Combine it with the position size calculator to size each trade to a fixed share of your account, and check the markets River Valley Capital offers on the trading instruments page.
